The Indian Wave...

People say that history repeats itself. It sure does, but the characters are different . Long ago when civilization would have first began on earth, the land was rich, the air pure, the water sweet and calm; all untouched by the wicked human mind. India was once called the land of the golden bird. The fertile soils reaped rich golden harvests feeding a fairly large population at the time. Technology was trickling down among its veins slow and steady. To what extent the British were responsible for the accelerated growth of technology or the rapid deceleration of monetary resources is argumentative.

No one can predict what would have happened without the intervention of the British. Were the seeds of cultural differences already sowed in our minds and would a partition still have been the ultimate outcome? Would we still be under the rules of kings and princes and not 'enjoying' our republican rights? Is it really possible that we would be counted among the developed countries by now? But how much damage did the outsiders do that we Indians haven't inflicted upon our country ourselves?

The British have long gone, people responsible for making them leave long dead and we still wait in hope of a miracle to transform our lives for the better. The blame game is the easiest to play. Many opponents, but sadly no winners. Politicians have thrown the country to the gutters, we say. But who gave them the power and confidence to do so. We turn a blind eye to the everyday injustices, waiting for someone else to clean the mess, but when noone does, a sense of unknown patriotism bubbles within us. We have been pecking at the soul of the country bit by bit everyday for a long time now.

Evertime we offer a bribe to an official we are cheating our fellow countrymen in their right to a better system. It appears as though many take the phrase 'Charity begins at home' in a very literal sense. Wearing black clothes and staring at Anna Hazare while he fasts for a better world, doesn't make us good citizens. There is no sense in thinking that if everyone is doing it, then I should too. A march always has to start with a single step. Bringing about a change is difficult at times, especially when doing nothing is easy; but that is exactly why it is more important.

Countless movies have been made on politics, patriotism and revolution. Some moving, others just forgettable. Countless youths flock to the cinemas to watch them. Some even buy tickets in black to watch movies against corruption. Long discussion goes on about them in internet forums, newspaper reviews, chat sessions and blogs and are finally awarded some trophies. Well thats the end of them. Noone goes to movies to get inspired. Though one of the most widely accepted and distributed mode of information for the masses, it still fails to make an ever-lasting impact.

People stand in queues all the time. The ones with the greens get ahead and the ones without, keep toiling away for their turn to arrive. From educational institutes to religious havens and hospitals, everything seems to be rotting away. How low are we willing to fall in our own eyes before we finally decide to look up. I dont intend to preach because I may be one of the many who unintentionally or otherwise have contributed to this whirlwind downfall of our country in some way. But its never too late for new beginnings... There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth... not going all the way, and not starting [- Buddha]
